Mais noite que dia em Varanasi quando partimos ao encontro dos Aghoris do outro lado do Ganges. A temperatura estava baixa e eu tremia não sei se de frio ou se de expectativa, pois não sabia ao certo o que ia encontrar. As histórias eram muitas e a possibilidade de assistir um ritual sombrio, nada comum para nós ocidentais, me assustava. Era a primeira vez que ia fotografar os Aghoris de perto no seu habitat.
Neste dia a travessia estava lindíssima, o dia amanhecendo, era tudo azul e as luzes da cidade, que ainda dormia, brilhavam nas águas do rio.
Como esquecer esse momento?
It was more night than day in Varanasi, when we set out to meet the Aghoris on the other side of the Ganges. The temperature was low, and I was shaking, I don't know whether from the cold or from anticipation because I wasn't sure what I would find. The stories were many, and the prospect of attending a somber ritual, unusual for us Westerners, scared me. It was the first time I was going to photograph the Aghoris close up in their habitat.
On this day, the crossing was beautiful, the day was dawning, everything was blue, and the lights of the still-sleeping city shone in the river water.
How to forget that moment?
De longe, eu já podia ver a silhueta fina que andava de uma cabana para outra dando àquela paisagem minimalista, arrepios. Sem dúvida, estava chegando o momento de conhecer de perto e fotografar aquelas criaturas de hábitos e costumes muito estranhos para mim.
From a distance, I could already see the thin silhouette that was going from one hut to another, making that minimalist landscape shiver. Without a doubt, I was about to see close-up and photograph those strange creatures whose habits and customs were very foreign to me.
A paisagem àquela hora era simplesmente tão sombria quanto o local, uma ilha deserta que mais parecia que eu havia chegado em algum lugar em outro planeta, desabitado.
The landscape at that hour was just as somber as the place, a desert island that looked more as if I had arrived somewhere on another, uninhabited planet,
O Aghori é um pequeno grupo de sadhus (místico andarilho) ascéticos de Shiva surgida no período medieval indiano que se envolve em rituais post-mortem. Geralmente moram em cemitérios, ou cabanas perto dos crematórios, esfregam cinzas em seus corpos provenientes de cremações e usam ossos de cadáveres humanos para seus rituais, criam utensílios e jóias de imitação as quais fazem uso de forma constante.
The Aghoris are a small group of ascetic sadhus (wandering mystics) devoted to Shiva, that emerged in the Indian medieval period and is involved in post-mortem rituals. They usually live in cemeteries, or huts near crematoriums, rub cremation ashes on their bodies, and use bones from human corpses for their rituals, creating imitation utensils and jewelry for everyday use.
A medida que o sol se levantava, ele praticava um mix de alongamentos e coreografia reverenciando o dia que lentamente surgia. Essa prática diária, segundo meu excelente guia indiano Manoj, é uma forma de também agradecer à Shiva os poderes que ele tem, ou julga ter.
As the sun rose, he practiced a mixture of stretches and choreography, in reverence to the slowly emerging day. This daily practice, according to my excellent Indian guide Manoj, is a way of also thanking Shiva for the powers he has, or thinks he has.
O "Aghori" começou a ganhar força durante o século 18 mas as tradições praticadas hoje são de origem recente.
Ao contrário de algumas ordens hindus conhecidas, os aghoris não são muito bem organizados. Na maior parte do tempo, eles vivem isolados e não confiam facilmente em pessoas de fora. Eles nem sequer mantêm contato com membros de sua própria família e a sua maioria vem de castas inferiores da sociedade indiana.
The Aghoris started gaining in numbers during the 18th century, but the traditions they practice today are of recent origin.
Unlike some well-known Hindu orders, the Aghoris are not very well organized. Most of the time, they live in isolation and do not readily trust outsiders. They do not even maintain contact with members of their own family, and most of them come from lower castes of Indian society.

They emerge from their isolated existence only during the Kumbh Mela, the main festival of Hinduism, which is held in four different locations in India, once every 12 years in each place. Conhecer culturas, vê-las e senti-las de perto é maravilhoso. É tanta riqueza que a India nos apresenta, quer seja na sua religiosidade, como em seus hábitos e costumes, sua forma de ser, suas cores vibrantes, seus contrastes, o contato com as pessoas nas ruas, seus monumentos, sua arte, que não dá para absorver numa única viagem.
Esta foi a minha quarta ida à India, onde meu olhar ávido, à procura de imagens, ainda não se saciou e confesso espero voltar outras vezes, da mesma forma que desejo também compartilhar nos meus futuros blogs, novas experiências e imagens desta cultura milenar.
The experience was worth it!
Getting to know different cultures, seeing and feeling them up close, is a wonderful experience. India presents such wealth, whether in its religiosity, its habits and customs, its way of being, its vibrant colors, its contrasts, the contact with the people in the streets, its monuments, or its art, that it's impossible to absorb it in a single trip. This was my fourth trip to this country, where my avid gaze searching for images has not yet been satiated, and I confess I hope to return again and again, just as I want to share new experiences and images of this ancient culture in my future blogs for anyone who is interested
